Beauty of emerald

What Determines the Value of an Emerald?

Emeralds are among the most distinctive and sought-after gemstones in the world, known for their rich green colour and unique internal character.

Prices can range from a few hundred dollars per carat to well over tens of thousands, depending on colour, origin and clarity.

Understanding these factors is key when selecting a high-quality emerald.

  • Commercial

    $500 – $2,000

Lighter colour, visible inclusions. Good for entry-level jewelry and casual wear.

  • Good

    $2,000 – $6,000

Pleasing green, moderate inclusions. Excellent for engagement rings and daily wear.

  • Fine

    $6,000 – $15,000

Rich colour, excellent transparency. Investment grade with minimal natural jardin.

  • Premium

    High-End

    $15,000 – $40,000+

Vivid saturation, rare clarity. The collector's choice, often Colombian or top Zambian.

  • Factor 01

    Colour

Colour is the most important factor in emerald pricing.

    The most valuable emeralds display:

    • Vivid green colour
    • Strong saturation
    • Balanced tone (not too dark or too light)

Emeralds with intense, vibrant green colour command premium prices.

  • Factor 02

    Origin

Origin plays a significant role in value.

    Colombian Emeralds:

Known for their bright, vivid green colour and high transparency. Often command the highest prices.

    Zambian Emeralds:

Display slightly deeper green tones with excellent clarity. Offer strong value and consistency.

    Brazilian Emeralds:

Typically more affordable with lighter green tones.

  • Factor 03

    Clarity

Unlike diamonds, inclusions are expected in emeralds.

These inclusions are referred to as “jardin” and are considered part of the gemstone’s character.

    However:

    • Fewer visible inclusions = Higher value
    • Higher transparency = More valuable
  • Factor 04

    Treatment

    Most emeralds undergo oiling to
    enhance clarity.

    Oiled Emeralds:

    Industry standard and widely accepted.

    Untreated Emeralds:

    Extremely rare and highly valuable.

Transparency around treatment is critical when buying emeralds.

  • Factor 05

    Size (Carat Weight)

Emerald prices increase significantly with size, especially for high-quality stones.

    Example:

    • 1ct emerald → Accessible
    • 2ct emerald → Rare
    • 3ct+ emerald → Premium
  • Emerald

    • Colour constitutes 70% of value. Certificates are secondary to visual beauty and personal connection.
    • As a Type III gemstone, flawless stones are essentially non-existent. Inclusions are accepted.
    • Standard industry practice involves minor cedar oiling to enhance the natural jardin.
  • Diamond

    • Value is heavily tied to strict 4C grading on a certificate. Visuals follow the paperwork.
    • Visible inclusions drastically reduce value and desirability in the market.
    • Any treatments (like laser drilling or fracture filling) severely punish the stone's value.
  • Colombian Emerald

    Colombian premium
    • Pure green hue that glows softly.
    • Highly prized historically, commanding top market prices.
    • Often contains more visible three-phase inclusions.
  • Zambian Emerald

    Zambian value
    • Deeper, cooler green tone with high brilliance.
    • Generally cleaner crystal structure and fewer inclusions.
    • Incredible value proposition for high-clarity stones.

Why Emeralds are Unique?

Emeralds are one of the few gemstones where inclusions are expected and accepted.
A perfectly clean emerald is extremely rare, and slight inclusions do not necessarily reduce value if the colour is exceptional.

  • entry level

    $2,000 – $5,000

Beautiful commercial grade. Ideal for a first piece, typically under 1.5ct with noticeable but pleasant jardin.

  • Good Quality

    $5,000 – $15,000

The sweet spot for engagement rings. Excellent colour in 1-2ct sizes, or larger stones with lighter saturation.

  • Fine Quality

    $15,000 – $40,000

Investment grade. Vibrant Colombian greens or exceptionally clean Zambians over 2 carats.

  • Collector Grade

    $40,000+

Museum quality. Uncompromising colour, rare size, and exceptional crystal transparency.

  • Prioritise Colour

A vibrant, heavily included emerald will always be more valuable and desirable than a pale, flawless one.

  • Consider Origin

Embrace the 'jardin'. Ensure the inclusions don't threaten the structural integrity of the stone, but accept them as a sign of authenticity.

  • Check Treatment Disclosure

Always ask about the level of oiling (None, Minor, Moderate, Significant). Minor oiling is perfectly acceptable; significant oiling should be discounted.

  • View Under Different Lighting

While Colombian commands a premium, a top-tier Zambian stone is often a better investment than a mediocre Colombian stone for the same price.
